About the role

You’ll be Outline’s first hire in engineering.

This is a hands-on, builder-first seat. As a founding engineer, you will be a technical north star. You will bring crucial individual contributions to the table in all key engineering areas, e.g.:

• The agentic core: orchestration, harness design, tool use, and the sandboxing that lets agents run safely on real financial data.
• The trust layer that sets us apart: consistency checks, ground-truth reconciliation, unit tests for business logic, back-testing, etc.
• Autonomous onboarding: getting a CFO from messy spreadsheets to a working setup in Outline with no/minimal human in the loop.
• The product and infra around all of it: you go end to end.

As the team grows, so will your scope: hiring, building our AI-assisted development cycle, shaping team rituals.

What we're looking for

• Strong software engineering fundamentals and end-to-end ownership
• You already build with AI agents daily and have opinions about how to do it well.
• Exceptionally clear writing. It's how we think, decide, and stay transparent.
• Product instinct: you care who the user is and what actually moves them.
• Comfort with ambiguity and speed. No one will tell you what to do. You'll tell us.
• Bonus: early-stage experience. We work in English; French is a plus.
